The first Lexington-Shinhidaka exchanges started in 1988 with the twinning of the two cities.
Shinhidaka students come to Lexington first for 5-6 days near the end of March. They stay with their counterpart and go to school with them. Lexington students later return the visit in mid-July, and travel to Shinhidaka for 10-12 days to stay with their counterpart and host family.
Students get to experience Japanese language and culture first hand during the exchange. They are also given the opportunity to be an ambassador for Lexington and show off their city and country to their Japanese counterpart.
